MEANWHILE!

I write this from the most jubilantly cacophonous Airbnb I have stayed at in recent memory, 4 hours from home, up at the top left of the Yucatan in Merida, on a fetch quest that started in 2019, and lead to the strange and blessed course of events that lead to my family and I somewhat unexpectedly finding ourselves living in Mexico.

Merida is noisy with joy and dancing. From what I’ve observed in half a day, the people here dance in the streets, the parks, the churches, and the museums, and loudly and merrily enjoy each other’s company. I was overcome with joy to see a number of jolly old chaps with guitars strapped to their chests playing music - not busking, not to an audience, seemingly not for anything other than the enjoyment of each other… almost conversationally. I wandered into a museum that had been taken over by a gaggle of teens, oldsters, and in-between, staging a fashion show slash dance party and selling each other their paintings of anime heroes, family members, and local icons alongside handmade jewelry and old clothes and books. A beaming young girl who’d cleared her stall ran out of the museum to a car to get more wares, and an army truck with a solder atop in full helmet and machine gun regalia stopped to let her pass and nodded respectfully. 

In the town center a band played beneath the clock tower as the sun set, and couples young and old slow-danced, while children skipped around gaily popping soap bubbles.

My heart was full of bursting. Full of that new city feeling, full of the spirit of adventure, full of gladness for the miracle of my life, full of wonder at the beauty of the spirit of my fellow humans. I’d have lingered longer, but my fetch quest requires me to be up and on it early, and this blog needed writing. Now I’m being bathed in the sound of the jollity of my immediate neighbors, who too seem very happy to be alive on this fine Sunday night in this most auspicious year of our lord, 2023 AD. 

And who can blame them?

Life is as kind as you let it be, after all.
